My brain has been pulsating with different ideas (none of them that new or creative). Just other people’s ideas and thoughts meshed in together and I’m trying to figure out which is true. Does the government have a right to determine what substances we put in our bodies, which psychoactive drugs we use to alter our consciousness? Why are guns legal when they are literally manufactured to harm living things while (some) opioids that create pleasure and relieve pain are not. Are these drugs laws really there to protect life or are they born out of racism and years of propaganda. At the same time I see the harms of illicit opioids and meth every single day- I see how it destroys people’s minds and bodies and spirits. But is it the drug itself or the drug policy. The criminalization and the stigma and the demoralization of people that choose to use a different kind of substance even though we use alcohol for similar effects. Some people get addicted and over indulge in things and some people do not despite trying the exact same substance. Is it trauma or poverty or genes or shame or undeveloped coping skills that lends itself to developing addiction. Fuck I don’t know. Just thinking. The only way out is through connection but can we stop judging people who choose to use different kinds of substances to cope with life.
