i've been very busy lately. well, actually. just more passionate about certain things. everything it seems is now revolving around my passion for ending..or at least learning and addressing all those issues surrounding homelessness. i was able to sit in a meeting today about this homelessness initiative taking place in this particular community and it was real interesting to hear these new and thoughtful opinions run through the minds and out through the mouths of these incredibly passionate and focused individuals. their ideas about disseminating the homeless population from the downtown eastside, and putting them in housing located elsewhere where they can be in supportive environments and in environments conducive to their health...its so important. i think people who believe that those without homes have put themselves in this situation due to their own choices, and thus can easily come out of their situations are missing the big picture. homelessness stems from a multitude of factors that are often times out of the individual's control. long histories of abuse, and even policies in place make certain populations and people more prone to using drugs..and prevent these people from even getting out of their situations. people's situated realities are determined by the context of their situation. their culture, their history, the political and social environment that they are subject to. if we keep viewing homelessness from our liberal individualistic view...we're forgetting that context of each of these people's realities. if we keep viewing these things from our privileged perspective, we'll never understand the true issues that these people face. these people are people. they are survivors. and they are human beings. its time we started treated them like so.
