warpednormal's Diaryland Diary

i have a paper due in less than a week, that i've barely started. i have an open mic performance this saturday, and i haven't even finished writing the song i want to play. i have a shit ton of stuff to study for clinical on monday because jon is going to be up in my ass with various and challenging questions.
so yeah.

i'm slightly stressed.

anyway. here's my outline.

Policy: Should nurses with clients experiencing drug addiction encourage harm reduction methods such as needle exchange, methadone treatment, or supervised injection sites?

"Nurses are guided by the Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses (CNA, 2002) to carry out and advocate for harm reduction strategies and thereby, protect the health of individuals and society as a whole."

Perspectives:

1. A health promotion perspective evidence shows that harm reduction reduces the risk of transmitting diseases, such as HIV/AIDS. This perspective focuses on weighing the benefits over the costs in regards to the health of the person and society
2. Dignity, Choice, Non-judgmental care- respecting the persons choice, understanding addiction is complex and cannot be cured instantly, treating drug-users with the same dignity as clients that are not
3. Justice- drug users and street involved people often experience incredible health inequities and encounter multiple barriers in accessing health care. This lens focuses on the fact that nurses must defend a broader commitment to social justice. As the CNA states, ethical nursing practice is influenced and often restricted by political, legal and social elements. To implement harm reduction strategies, nurses need the support and guidance of governments, organizations and institutions (CNA, 2007). Therefore, nurses must advocate for changes in laws, regulations, and policies that hinder ethical practice and are consistent with determinants that cause ill health such as homelessness, poverty, violence and racism (Pauly et al., 2007).

so much research to do. at least i chose a topic i'm super interested in!! kind of excited, either way.
